Don’t be fooled by the 0-1 scoreline, we were awful in nearly every single way today. Huddersfield certainly weren’t great but they were still better than us. Garry Monk didn’t get it right with the team today but one stand-out player could have bailed us out, and a stand out player in white there was not.

Why Monk isn’t reverting to his 4-2-3-1 formation that we played throughout pre-season and in the two opening games I don’t know, but I can speculate. He wants to play Marcus Antonsson due to the players promising movement, he doesn’t want to play him on his own therefore he has to play Wood? Pablo Hernandez is the most naturally talented footballer at the club, history tells you that. He’s a number 10 brought in to play that role and he’s a player who isn’t getting played or out of position when he is. Mowatt on the wing? Not for me.

We were pretty solid at the back today. Luke Ayling had a very poor game but Pontus Jansson and Kyle Bartley dealt with everything thrown at them. Rob Green didn’t. When Cairney curled Fulham in front I thought Green was at fault and on reflection he wasn’t, the opposite today. I thought Mooy had picked out the far corner from where I was sitting but looking back it was central, what Rob Green was doing I don’t know. It was the only way either team was going to score and in typical fashion we didn’t even force a save worthy of mentioning.

Wood missed a header, Antonsson should have had a penalty but that’s about it. We haven’t had a penalty at home since April 2014…let that just sink in. To be fair Van la Parra should have one second half and didn’t. At the start of the season I did my preview of all the teams in the league and Aaron Mooy was the one I picked out for Huddersfield having watched him for Western Sydney in Australia. He was different class today. He should have walked for a horrible tackle but he didn’t and he dictated the game at walking pace. Is Blackburn a must win game? Probably getting that way.

Changes need to be made on Tuesday.

Man of the match – Aaron Mooy

Player Ratings

Green – 5 – Decent game then awful mistakje for the goal.

Ayling – 4 – Ripped apart by Van la Parra today.

Bartley – 6 – Looked better with Jansson, solid in the main.

Jansson – 7 – Won everything from set-pieces, good debut.

Taylor – 5 – Seriously frustrated me when he had the ball out wide, refused to put early cross in.

Bridcutt – 6 – Worked hard but didn’t get on the ball enough.

Phillips – 5 – Hard to put finger on what went wrong, just wasn’t ever in the game.

Sacko – 4 – One good run in first 5 minutes then faded drastically.

Mowatt – 5 – Same as Phillips, played out of position again.

Antonsson – 4 – Good runs but poor touch today, needs to get into scoring positions.

Wood – 4 – Didn’t win much and no-one near him when he did, poor balls into him and missed best chance.

About Author

Born in Gibraltar, raised in Scotland from a very young age. Been a huge fan of Leeds United since I could walk and talk, thanks to my Dad, the English half of me. After a few years in Australia I moved to Leeds, the trips from Scotland down to the city a few times a season didn't cut it. Love the city. Love the people, and the 12 hour round trip to Elland Road is about a 20 minute round trip. Love writing about the club, the more I write the more I feel comfortable doing it. As long as it's enjoyable I'll continue to do so, keep looking to step it up and progress as well. Leeds United is more than just a football team for me, as is it with so many others.
