From the off we were looking off the pace yesterday. Garry Monk set out his side with no real surprises, Pontus Jansson unavailable through injury and he was badly missed. One defensive mix-up cost the game in the end as we didn’t really look like getting the goal back in a big game.
Reading are a team full of decent players but together they keep the ball well and at times yesterday we were opened up. It was frustrating that our key attacking players were so poor because Reading defensively aren’t great and had it pretty easy. Reading got the early lead which seemed to scupper our game plan which simply not to concede the first goal. Charlie Taylor was caught cold and headed a shocking clearance across goal which bizarrely Liam Cooper jumped over and Kermogant smashed it past Green who did well to even get a hand on it.
After that we lost composure and were totally dominated in the first half, Liam Bridcutt and Ronaldo Vieira having to cover what seemed a sea of green in the middle as the three in front were non existent. Hernandez and Pedraza along with Bartley missed chances but it terms of creation for Wood, quite simply there was none. The second half was better but we didn’t really look like getting back into the game. we need to be so much better than what we were, to many players had poor games yesterday and the sooner we can get Jansson and Ayling back into the side the better.
Man of the match – Rob Green – Did everything well on the day.
Rob Green – 8 – Kept us in the game and was very assured with balls into the box.
Berardi – 7 – Had a good game in comparison to the other defenders, didn’t put a foot wrong.
Bartley – 6 – Alongside Liam Cooper who had a shocker so wasn’t at his best.
Cooper – 4 – Seemed to lose his head and start his diagonals which didn’t work once. Awful for the goal and in general, shame after such a good display against Brighton.
Taylor – 5 – Another at fault for opener, and didn’t want to put in early crosses, very frustrating.
Bridcutt – 6 – Came into it in the second half and much more commanding in the middle.
Vieira – 5 – Couldn’t get into his stride, to be expected given his age and how much he’s played.
Sacko – 4 – Not given the ball enough and when he was, did nothing.
Hernandez – 4 – Another one of them games for Pablo.
Pedraza – 5 – Didn’t do enough to keep his place for me, need to see Roofe back in.
Wood – 6 – Given nothing, worked hard all the same.
Doukara – 6 – Worked hard, helped give us some pressure.
Phillips/Roofe – N/A
