Leeds United will travel to newly promoted Bolton Wanderers for their opening game of the upcoming season on Sunday 6th of August, which will also be shown live on Sky Sports with a 4:30 kick off.
The following week Leeds return to Elland Road to face another Lancashire opponent, with Preston North End making the trip across the Pennines on Saturday the 12th of August. Simon Grayson will return to his former home as boss of PNE and will undoubtedly receive a warming welcome.
United’s boxing day fixture for the 2017/18 season is away to Burton Albion, and with the Pirelli Stadium only housing 1,500 away supporters tickets will be hard to come across. The Brewers were promoted from League 1 in the 2015/16 season and surprisingly managed to retain their Championship status last term, with manager Brian Clough working with an extremely tight budget and mainly relying on free transfers and loans.
Other notable fixtures is the clash with Nottingham Forest at Elland Road on New Years day, and the concluding game of season at home to Queens Park Rangers on the 6th of May. Leeds travel to Garry Monk’s Middlesbrough on Saturday the 3rd of March, with the Teesside club making the short trip South on Saturday the 18th of November. Monk surprisingly resigned as Leeds’ head coach around a month ago to make the switch to Boro, so is expected to receive a hostile reception from the Elland Road faithful.
For the 10th time in the last 12 seasons, Leeds will start the campaign with a different head coach- with Thomas Christensen taking over as boss last week. The former APOEL manager will hope to get off to a good start in the hotseat with positive results early on in the season, which will help to release the pressure mounted on him for not being a ‘big name appointment’. The sooner Christensen get the points on the board the more confidence he will have for himself as well as increasing the fans confidence in him; which is a vital aspect of having a successful season.
