It felt a long time since we were stood at Guiseley a year ago watching a second string Leeds side that included Chris Wood just about scrape past the hosts. We went 3-0 down but came back to win the game, but things were much better this year, and started after 20 seconds with a beauty.

Thomas Christiansen got the chance to witness the fans for the first time and the small stadium was packed out as thousands turned up to watch the first pre-season game available. The Spanish boss would take charge of his first game with fans and he fielded two sides in both halves to get the job done and give everyone minutes. The first half was Green, Ayling, Bellusci, Jansson, Denton at the back. In the middle of the park was Phillips and O’Kane with Hernandez just in front, Dallas and Roofe wide and Antonsson up front. Two beauties from Stuart Dallas got us going before Guiseley pulled one back. An own goal or Antonsson goal (I’m not sure which) followed before the break.

After the break we started Wiedwald, McKay, Diagouraga, Cooper and Berardi. Bridcutt captained the side alongside Ronaldo Vieira with Doukara coning in to play as the number 10. Hadi Sacko and Gomes flanked and Lee Erwin got his chance up front. It was Erwin’s half as the Scottish striker scored a clever finish across goal and then was on hand to snap up a late 5th as Leeds ran out very comfortable winners against decent non-league opposition. Christiansen will be happy with aspects but will know some areas of the squad is very weak.

Man Of The Match

Lee Erwin – A top second half performance from the Scottish striker who hasn’t had a chance at the club so far. Two different goals and an all-round top display. Making a serious claim to be part of the plans on that performance.

Player Ratings

Green – 7 – Not much to do, did what he had to well. Captain.

Wiedwald – 7 – Roared at his defence all game which was great to see, played a lot with the ball at is feet. Like no keeper we’ve seen at Leeds in my opinion. Sweeper keeper.

Left Backs

Denton – 6 – Defended well but distribution let him down. Showed his pace.

Berardi – 8 – Solid, won everything and went forward time and time again.

Right Backs

Ayling – 6 – A bit sloppy at times but to be expected in pre-season, goal came from his side, all round good display.

McKay – 5 – Couldn’t cope with the pace of number 22, struggled to get to grips with him.

Centre Backs

Pontus Jansson – 8 – Game was a breeze for him, enjoyed picking up a flare, a class above.

Bellusci – 8 – Like him or not he had a very good half. Other issues are what they are. Needs to be sorted. In reality he will have to leave.

Cooper – 6 – distribution was poor but defended well, went off injured.

Diagouraga  – 7 – Actually played very well, calm in possession and got us playing from the back.

Central Midfielders

Phillips – 5 – Quite a poor game, didn’t do much and was non-existent during his half.

O’Kane – 7 – Did some very nice things but needs to trust his ability, seemed to push it too much at times with switching passes.

Vieira – 6 – Didn’t really do much but worked very hard, helped control the game.

Bridcutt – 9 – I’ve been critical of him after last season, but a quality display today. Dominated the game when he came on. More of the same please and we will have our captain back.

Dallas – 9 – Best I have seen him in a long time. Worked hard, used his strengths and scored two wonderful goals.

Roofe – 5 – Didn’t have a great game at all. Didn’t seem to get at the defence like we know he can.

Sacko – 7 – #SquareItHadi. And he did just that. Thought he was quality today, set up one and constantly at the Guiseley back line.

Gomes – 5 – Direct but needs to work on his end ball. Showed glimpses of potential.

Hernandez – 6 – Did well for third goal but needs to be more creative in final third. Dropped deep but not where we need him.

Doukara – 6 – Did good things and got at the defence, not his natural position but did well.

Antonsson – 4 – Felt sorry for him, he isn’t a loan striker and he really struggled. Unsure if it was his goal or an own goal.

Erwin – 9 – Quality from the Scottish striker. Powerful, ran the channels, held the ball up and got two goals. Looked like a new man and has jumped up in my estimations after today.

About Author

Born in Gibraltar, raised in Scotland from a very young age. Been a huge fan of Leeds United since I could walk and talk, thanks to my Dad, the English half of me. After a few years in Australia I moved to Leeds, the trips from Scotland down to the city a few times a season didn't cut it. Love the city. Love the people, and the 12 hour round trip to Elland Road is about a 20 minute round trip. Love writing about the club, the more I write the more I feel comfortable doing it. As long as it's enjoyable I'll continue to do so, keep looking to step it up and progress as well. Leeds United is more than just a football team for me, as is it with so many others.
