Some very good news has broken in the last hour or so. The club are closing in on a deal to sign young Everton centre back Matthew Pennington on a season-long-loan. The 22 year-old is a huge prospect at Everton and is a perfect fit for Leeds who are very light in that position.
Pennington played 7 times for Everton in the last couple of years and famously scored against Liverpool at Anfield last season. He has also been on a few loans to lower league clubs and will be looking to get some first-team experience before he goes back and fights for his place at Goodison Park. Michael Keane, Ashley Williams, Funes-Mori and Phil Jagielka are all currently on the books with the Toffees and Pennington will want to being playing on a regular basis. Leeds currently have Pontus Jansson and Liam Cooper as the only two centre backs at the club and it’s fair to say the latter hasn’t cemented a spot in the team in the last few years.
Leeds are crying out for a partner for Jansson and Pennington could be the perfect fit. Everton will want him to be playing every week at a good level and the opportunity at Leeds offers just that. Phil Hay of the Yorkshire Evening Post has confirmed that he is on his way to Leeds although the deal isn’t done yet and reports from other sources are that we have beaten both Hull City and Middlesbrough to the signature of the highly rated youngster. Very exciting signing.
I will have a fan view if and when the deal is confirmed from an Everton fan.
