New head coach Thomas Christiansen suffered his fist loss as Leeds United head coach in yesterday afternoon’s 3-0 loss against Turkish top flight side Bursaspor.
The game was hastily arranged in Italy after Leeds’ game against FC Ingolstadt, which was scheduled for last Sunday, was cancelled by Austrian authorities 48 hours before kickoff. Despite a clause in the game stating that either side could not report or show the game, as well as being played behind closed doors, Bursaspor briefly showed the first 20 minutes of the game live on social media before being forced to stop by UEFA- with the full 90 minutes uploaded to their YouTube channel Bursasportv after the game.
The Super Lig side took the lead in the 11th minute through a William Troost-Ekong header, looping over Marco Silvestri in the United net. The Whites thought that they’d hit back almost immediately after Liam Cooper played through Stuart Dallas minutes after the opener, however the finish was controversially ruled out for offside. Bursaspor doubled their lead after the break in the 63rd minute with Thomas Necid finding the back of the net and a late Sinan Bakis finish topped off the scoreline.
Christiansen gave most of the traveling squad 45 minutes in the friendly, with new signings Caleb Ekuban, Samu Saiz and Ezgjan Alioski coming on in the second half to make their Leeds debuts. United will hope to bounce back from a disappointing result when they face German Bundesliga side Borussia Moenchengladbach on Thursday.
Leeds team first half: Silvestri, Ayling, Jansson, Cooper, Berardi, Dallas, O’Kane, Phillips, Roofe, Hernandez, Wood.
Leeds team second half: Silvestri, Gomes, Cooper, Shaughnessy, Anita, Alioski, Bridcutt, Saiz, Antonsson, Doukara, Ekuban.
