A bad night in the Welsh capital started with a slip and ended with three thousand Leeds fans signing their hearts out. It was a write-off in all honesty and we looked beaten as soon as the first goal hit the back of the net. Cardiff were the better side on the night but weren’t even that great. From Sol Bamba looking like a world beater to Leeds failing to tackle or retain the ball we got what we deserved and changes will be made for the trip to Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday.

Player Ratings

Felix Wiedwald – 6 – I didn’t think the keeper did anything wrong at all. Could do nothing about any of the goals and was left exposed by a defence that looked like they hadn’t played together before. Apart from the goals had nothing to do.

Luke Ayling – 5 – Started well for me but then got the run-around from Junior Hoilett who had him on toast for the night. Couldn’t get to grips with him and wasn’t helped by Ezgjan Alioski who couldn’t hold the ball and lost it to the Cardiff left side time and time again.

Pontus Jansson – 5 – Had a terrible night and although he looked better alongside the best defender Matthew Pennington he still looked off the pace. An early knock may not have helped him, he looked dazed and a bit shocked after taking a big hit from Wiedwald.

Liam Cooper – 3 – Last season that sort of performance would have been standard in my eyes, even the season before. Last night he had an off night. He has been brilliant this season and he needs to get over it and get back to his best. Daft red card, I have no idea what he was doing for the second yellow.

Gartano Berardi – 5 – Didn’t do a lot wrong but he was part of a horrible defensive showing and when we needed a goal he did everything but put it in the net. I think he may retain his place on Sunday at Wednesday but that wasn’t him at his best, for sure.

Mateusz Klich – 4 – A disaster of a debut but I don’t think the player’s ability is in doubt. He slipped which led to the opener after showing some lovely little passes beforehand and he didn’t recover. He looked like he hadn’t played with Phillips before.

Kalvin Phillips – 4 – For me Kalvin Phillips only has one thing standing in his way to becoming a huge success at Leeds United and that is his consistency. He lacks it and last night he had a very poor game. I expect him to start on Sunday and bounce back, people need to realise you don’t become a bad player in the space of three days.

Gjanni Alioksi – 4  – The Macedonian isn’t having a great spell after such a good start to his Leeds career. I make that four very average to poor games on the bounce and he needs to refind that form. As I said above players don’t become bad players overnight and Alioski is set for a big Leeds career.

Pablo Hernandez – 4 – Up against Sol Bamba he had to have a huge game. Our best footballer Samu Saiz was benched and it was the chance for Pablo to show us he has the ability to match Saiz, and as expected he didn’t. Got a knock early on and we didn’t see him after that.

Stuart Dallas – 5 – Didn’t happen for Dallas last night after he grafted and worked his chance in the starting team. I think we may see him given another start on Sunday but it also wouldn’t surprise me to see Kemar Roofe start, the winger was probably our best player on the night.

Kemar Roofe – 6 – Our best player last night and the only player who wanted to get on the ball and try to make things happen. He basically did Pablo Hernandez’s job for him but dropping and picking up the ball and got his goal.

Subs

Matthew Pennington – 6

Jay-Roy Grot – 3

Ronaldo Vieira – 5

About Author

Born in Gibraltar, raised in Scotland from a very young age. Been a huge fan of Leeds United since I could walk and talk, thanks to my Dad, the English half of me. After a few years in Australia I moved to Leeds, the trips from Scotland down to the city a few times a season didn't cut it. Love the city. Love the people, and the 12 hour round trip to Elland Road is about a 20 minute round trip. Love writing about the club, the more I write the more I feel comfortable doing it. As long as it's enjoyable I'll continue to do so, keep looking to step it up and progress as well. Leeds United is more than just a football team for me, as is it with so many others.
