Seems like we all expected to lose last night and the players seemed to start the game thinking like they were going to lose. 30 minutes in the second half and we looked like winning and a terrible substitution changed the tactics that were working so well, Christiansen undoing the good work he had done at half time by totally changing the style, and we paid the price heavily. Individual errors glaringly obvious yet again.

Ratings

Andy Lonergan – 3 – Horrendous display from someone who has seemed reliable but not great so far. His inability to play the ball out from the back puts us under so much pressure but the two mistakes last night cost us the game when it comes down to it. Wiedwald didn’t make errors to get dropped, just wasn’t commanding at Sheffield Wednesday.

Luke Ayling – 4 – When you really like a player you have to take a step back and ask yourself how they are performing at times. This is one of those situations. The rest will do Ayling good, he should never have played last night with the form he is in. Caught out of position time and time again.

Pontus Jansson – 4 – The main issue from the Jansson performance was the penalty incident which actually didn’t cost us. A terrible attempt at a tackle from a player who’s out of sorts. It looks to me like he is losing a bit of spirit. Fired one into Ayling and laughed when it went out, and was poor on the ball.

Liam Cooper – 5 – Didn’t play well but did put in a couple of very good blocks. I don’t really know where we go from here in terms of defensive partnerships because the whole defence is just crumbling on a weekly basis at the moment. Cooper isn’t leading the team anymore, another huge issue. Could have gone off last night for a poor tackle that went unpunished.

Gaetano Berardi – 5 – The right-back situation wasn’t going well but it wasn’t going much better on the side of Berardi. Balls that were clearly going over his head were left until too late and he didn’t have a good first half. Second much better.

Ronaldo Vieira – 7 – One of a couple of players who actually looked like they were giving 100% from the very start. Even though we didn’t have a good first half he ran and ran and in the second he was the engine. At times the mind-set of Saiz was stick close to Vieira because he’s the only one winning the ball back for him.

Eunan O’Kane – 4 – Just isn’t happening for him at the moment. He, like Ayling is a player that I really admire and enjoy watching but he needs to be left out for a game or two just to give him a shot in the arm. He isn’t the only one, games just drifting by with no impact from some of these players. hooked at half time, says it all.

Kalvin Phillips – 5 – I wouldn’t have started him yesterday because I thought the midfield two against Derby worked very well, it wasn’t the midfield that was an issue that night. Him playing meant Saiz was forced to play from the left again and it flopped horribly.

Gjianni Alioksi – 5 – Didn’t play well at all to be honest but popped up with an important goal. Didn’t have much impact but after scoring he subbed him off. When he’s been having terrible games he stays on, when he scores and is probably at his most confident for a while and we are on top he is subbed off. Bizarre.

Samu Saiz – 7 – Doesn’t ever seem to have a bad game. It’s becoming a situation where his team-mates are letting him down every single week.

Pierre-Michel Lasogga – 3 – Genuinely didn’t look like he wanted to be playing last night. Like him or not Kemar Roofe never looks like that when he pulls on a Leeds shirt, even if he plays poor.

Subs

Pablo Hernandez – 6 – Did frustrate at times but one thing is for sure he should be starting games at the moment. Added something to the side and wanted the ball. Happy with his input into the side, not his fault the substitution meant we lost control.

Kemar Roofe – 6 – We looked much better when he came on. There is a myth that we don’t hold the ball if he is up-front, which isn’t the case at all. He drops into the hole and takes the ball, allowing Saiz to get beyond him. Needs to be starting the next game unless Ekuban is fit.

Jay-Roy Grot – 3 – Actually felt sorry for Grot last night, he should never have come on in that game and I can’t see why he was. Truly terrible decision. Bring Dallas on for Alioski, really not difficult. Swung the game.

About Author

Born in Gibraltar, raised in Scotland from a very young age. Been a huge fan of Leeds United since I could walk and talk, thanks to my Dad, the English half of me. After a few years in Australia I moved to Leeds, the trips from Scotland down to the city a few times a season didn't cut it. Love the city. Love the people, and the 12 hour round trip to Elland Road is about a 20 minute round trip. Love writing about the club, the more I write the more I feel comfortable doing it. As long as it's enjoyable I'll continue to do so, keep looking to step it up and progress as well. Leeds United is more than just a football team for me, as is it with so many others.
