Leeds United had already announced the capture of Spanish international striker Rodrigo Moreno for a club-record £27m before Whites fans took to plane tracking apps to search for airports and charter jets around the Freiburg area.
As a plane was narrowed down to be ‘the one’, Leeds fans not only took to social media to track it there were even some at Leeds Bradford International Airport to film it landing. Spygate and Derby County had nothing on this series of events.
It all led to this:
✍️ #LUFC are pleased to announce the signing of Robin Koch from Bundesliga side SC Freiburg
— Leeds United (@LUFC) August 29, 2020
The 24-year-old, two-cap German international signs on at Elland Road for a fee reported to be a shade under £13m and does so on a four-year deal that will take him through until the summer of 2024.
Koch has come on massively in the last three years since signing for Freiburg from FC Kaiserslautern who play in Germany’s third-tier competition. Drop back another couple of years to 2015 and Koch was playing for SV Eintracht Trier 05, a side who ply their trade in the fifth tier of German football.
The 6ft 3in centre-back has featured in 87 games for SC Freiburg, scoring 5 goals and creating 2 assists. 82 of those games have been been in Germany’s 1.Bundesliga competition, a far cry from just five years ago when he was turning out in the Oberliga.
