Not really a surprise but a tinge of disappointment at the news Marcus Antonsson is now being eyed by some of Sweden’s top clubs. Malmo are one of the clubs eyeing the striker after his move from Sweden hasn’t worked out the way he or we wanted.
He wants to stay, he is making that quite clear in the Swedish media but he is also aware that a move may well be the best for him. He has barely played since his arrival and the physical aspects of England seem to have swallowed him up. I say disappointment because he has shown glimpses of quality in a Leeds shirt and he clearly wants to be playing for the club, but it isn’t likely as things stand, he hasn’t even got off the bench in the last two pre-season friendless, new signing Caleb Ekuban jumping ahead of him in the pecking order under Thomas Christiansen. We need another striker who will get us goals and Antonsson simply doesn’t look like doing that in the league.
Malmo are just one of the clubs after him and the move would probably suit Antonsson. The club is the biggest in Sweden and do play European football, the standard of leagues is a huge drop and he says he and his family are settled in Leeds, there lies another issue. However it seems the move will have to happen, Leeds apparently chasing another striker and two already ahead of him, with only one spot up for grabs in the first-team judging by Christiansen’s formation. I would expect movement in the coming days and weeks and sentiment has to go out of the window, he hasn’t proved himself and in reality his future is probably elsewhere.
