Kalvin Phillips and Tyler Denton have both been handed new deals at the club ahead of the new season, with Denton set to head out on loan. The pair are products of the clubs youth system and have played in the first-team, Phillips much more than Denton.
Kalvin Phillips has signed a deal that will keep him at the club until 2021. The central midfielder played a lot of games last season which was a surprise in all honesty and has managed to play a fair amount this pre-season, something we weren’t really expecting after the early signing of Mateusz Klich. Phillips started last week against Oxford ahead of this Sunday’s opener which was again surprising. Personally I would like to see him loaned out so he could have a full season in the middle of the park, playing every week and coping with the pressure of being one of the main men in a side, whether that is at a newly promoted side or even a top-end League One side.
Tyler Denton is a totally different situation. Denton hasn’t played any first-team football in the League and that represents a huge question mark on what he does now. There is talk about him being loaned out and for me it is the only viable option. He won’t be in the first-team this season, Gaetano Berardi, a natural eight back is currently considered the only option, which shows the uncertainty over Denton. Cameron Borthwick-Jackson seems set to join the club, Thomas Christiansen confirming he likes the player and various sources saying the deal is on its way to being done.
