The club have today issued a statement telling fans that they will swap any replica jersey with “Wood” on the back with a brand new plain shirt. The announcement comes after Wood left to join Burnley for £15 million, a player who easily had the most replica shirts sold with his name on.
Wood leaves Leeds having scored 30 goals last season and 12 the year before, so he was a firm favourite with fans of the club, which is to be expected. He wore the iconic number 9 shirt which also helps sell shirts. “Wood 9” shirts are by far the most common kicking about Elland Road on game day and fans now have the chance to get the shirt again, having spent decent money on the original. This isn’t a common move by clubs but Andrea Radrizzani’s start to Leeds life has been nothing but positive, so much so that the departure of Wood hasn’t really upset anyone, especially given the fact he has promised to re-invest the money into the club.
The club announced this today via the official website,
“Leeds United are advising any fans who have ‘Wood 9’ printed on the back of a 2017/18 home or away replica shirt that they are able to return the item to our club shop and exchange it for a new blank replica shirt.”
Leeds have already signed some players who will excite fans and sell shirts. Ezgjan Alioski was given the number 10 shirt, another famous number that Leeds fans like to see attacking players flourish in. Samu Saiz is wearing the number 21 shirt and Pontus Jansson the number 18.
