I have given myself plenty of time to reflect on what happened at Elland Road on Friday night before I do my write up and player ratings. It was a dreadful performance and I’m getting a bit sick of the lack of ideas when we fall behind. We can’t just win when we score the first goal and Christiansen has to be able to adapt, and I don’t mean put Phillips on the left wing for the second half.

Player Ratings

Andy Lonergan – 7 – Made some very good and important saves but his distribution was absolutely shocking. Kicked a few out of play and didn’t learn that launching it to Lasogga wasn’t working. Very good apart from that, but it constantly put us under pressure if we don’t distribute it correctly.

Luke Ayling – 4 – I thought he was one of the worst, not the worst but he was very poor. Apart from Bristol City he has been awful recently and he needs to re-discover that form from early season, as do many. Caught out positionally for the second goal, a carbon copy of his mistake against Reading two weeks ago.

Matthew Pennington – 4 – Didn’t look comfortable all night as was nowhere when Billy Sharp put Sheffield United in front early on. Needs to be showing more confidence on the ball because he gave it away in daft positions and it made us look very shaky.

Liam Cooper – 5 – Was the better of the two defenders but wasn’t great. We need Pontus Jansson back in there playing well and Cooper will follow, he isn’t the defensive block in the team. Needed to have a big game and after 2 minutes that went out of the window.

Vurnon Anita – 5- Didn’t do much wrong for me on the night but certainly didn’t stand out. Doesn’t get forward and help support in the slightest, has to work on that side of his game if he wants to hold down that position. For me Cameron Borthwick-Jackson should be playing when fit.

Eunan O’Kane – 5 – I really like what Eunan O’Kane brings to the side but he didn’t bring it at all on Friday. If I’m honest I thought he was a passenger on the night, as a few were and although he didn’t do much wrong he didn’t do much at all.

Kalvin Phillips – 5 – Scored a very good goal but yet again he didn’t bring much else. I was stunned that he was moved to play left-wing in the second half, seemed to go unnoticed by many, Saiz went into the number 10 role and he shifted left.

Ronaldo Vieira – 5 – Got in about the away side at times but was on his own in doing that and in the end it kind of died out. Wasn’t great on the ball but the effort was there, again, unlike many of the players. Will start on Tuesday for sure.

Gjanni Alioski – 3 – been going on for too long now, last good game was Forest, we need him to start showing his ability.

Samu Saiz – 7 – The only player to look like he would do something but had absolutely no help on the night. Got very frustrated at the lack of movement around and in-front of him and how can you blame him. Needed help from the bench, it didn’t come.

Pierre-Michel Lasogga – 3 – The less said the better.

Pontus Jansson – 6

Pablo Hernandez – 5

Jay-Roy Grot – 4

About Author

Born in Gibraltar, raised in Scotland from a very young age. Been a huge fan of Leeds United since I could walk and talk, thanks to my Dad, the English half of me. After a few years in Australia I moved to Leeds, the trips from Scotland down to the city a few times a season didn't cut it. Love the city. Love the people, and the 12 hour round trip to Elland Road is about a 20 minute round trip. Love writing about the club, the more I write the more I feel comfortable doing it. As long as it's enjoyable I'll continue to do so, keep looking to step it up and progress as well. Leeds United is more than just a football team for me, as is it with so many others.
