In news that will fill Leeds United fans full of equal measures of bile and vitriol, comes interest in leading scorer Kemar Roofe. It’s not just ‘some’ interest, but ‘interest’ of the darkest and most loathsome sort.
The team that is said ‘interested’ in him – Turkish side Galatasaray. That’s if the following is to be believed.
— CNN TÜRK Spor (@CNNTURKSpor) January 2, 2019
Of course, no Leeds fan needs to ever be reminded of just why Roofe being linked with that Turkish club is distasteful. The events of the particular night that is the genesis point of all the hatred is still fresh on the minds of many Whites fans. Suffice to say, the name of the Turkish club in question is mud beyond mud to Leeds United supporters.
That news alone, that they are ‘interested’ in Roofe, is enough to sicken every Leeds United fan, and rightly so after the events of Istanbul that left two Leeds United fans killed at the hands of fans of the Turkish club. The headline of the above tweet from CNN TÜRK Spor has it right when it says: ‘Transfer crisis between Galatasaray and Leeds United’.
The article it links to only says that fans of that Turkish side “appeared to be interested” in Kemar Roofe and that this “claim has made the Leeds United fans mad.”
Mad, that would be an understatement; livid only just comes close and still doesn’t reach the level of revulsion felt from Leeds United fans towards the Turkish club and the base level of some of their fans to this very day.
That said, and what cannot be denied, is that Kemar Roofe is having a fantastic season at Elland Road, and interest is bound to come with that. His output in Marcelo Bielsa’s side is such that he has 13 goals in 20 appearances this season for the Whites. Those headline figures are always going to generate interest.
Verdict – Roofe to Turkey; fact or fiction?
As I said, Kemar Roofe is always going to attract interest due to the returns that he brings – 13 goals in 20 games is enough to make any other side sit up and take note.
Newcastle are said to have shown a degree of interest, and not the Turkish side have thrown their hat into the ring. Allegedly. I say allegedly as there is little of substance to validate it.
With that in mind, any degree of movement regarding Roofe is likely just column-filler inches. Hopefully, this is one Turkey that is being stuffed but not served hope.
